March moving brings April unpacking and May family fun

The Shejen family achieved our New Year’s resolution back in March when we successfully bought our new home & sold our first family home.  The blog, accordingly, has been sadly neglected!  But just because we haven’t been actively posting, doesn’t mean that we’re not having fun or exciting.

Ever the overachievers, we listed our house in January, got an offer, put in an offer on our home, lost our original offer, got a new offer, and finally closed on two homes within a month.

We sold our starter home, which was supposed to be our “5 year home” and ended up being our “11 year home.”  There were so many great memories at the old home, like meeting the cats, bringing home the babies, and so many wonderful neighbors.  But, we had simply run out of room!

Accordingly, March was a busy month that involved a lot of boxes, tape and stress!  But it was all part of the plan!  We closed on the new house in the middle of the month, and were fortunate to have a week and a half before we closed on the old house.  We are thankful for all of the friends and family who helped us move all of our stuff, helped to watch the kids while we moved our stuff, and simply reassured us that this too would be over soon!

April

The kids & cats varied in their ability to adapt to the new house.  Logan settled in immediately.  He had his crib, we still fed him, he had his pacifier (he calls it his “Ah Ah”), that little man was all set.

The cats hid for three days in the downstairs coat closet.  Then they came out and were perfectly fine.  They have settled on Camden’s bunk bed as their hang out, unless she’s in it, in which case they have claimed the rest of the home as their domain.

Camden took a little longer.  She was upset that we moved out of “her house.”  We had her bedroom set up immediately, in the colors she requested, along with the rainbow & beanstalk that she insisted were the decor theme.  We took her back to the old house when it was completely empty, to show her that none of her stuff was left behind.  That helped.  But she wasn’t completely happy in her room until she had her curtains.  She asked me to hang her curtains from the old house back up, and at that  point, I guess it felt like her room again.  Odd kid, that one!  What 4 year old doesn’t feel at home until she has her drapes?

In April, we hosted our first family holiday on Easter Sunday, and the kids had a lot of fun hunting for eggs and we discovered that little Logan is a huge chocoholic.  He will eat any piece of chocolate, wrapper and all, that he can find!

May

We’re setting in the new house, and with a lot of help from Gary, our contractor in residence, we’re putting our personal touches on the place.  We’ve met our neighbors, all of whom seem very nice, and have been welcoming. The kids love having a yard to play in and a driveway to play on.  I love having a giant closet of my own (with personal touches by Matt) as well as a great kitchen to cook in.  Matt likes having a yard worthy of a John Deere, as well as how his commute has improved.  All in all, we’re happy here.  And although we still drive by the old house from time to time (since it’s only 7 miles away!), we’re already making some wonderful new memories here.
